DES DELAHUNTY RIP (CAPTAIN 2003) DIED Feb. 2009

DES DELAHUNTY RIP

It is with deep regret that we note the death of Des Delahunty, our former captain. Des was a popular member of the club for the past ten years and during that time; he took an active part on the committee as well as being involved in the management of the club teams especially our Mixed Foursomes and Belvedere Cup teams. Des also had a great interest in helping out with the junior members of the club with his son Keith who was our Junior Officer for the past number of years. Des also donated two beautiful shields for the annual junior competitions. Des will be sadly missed at the club where he always made himself available to help in running all our major competitions both for the ladies as well as for the men. Des would always be on the first tee to make sure everyone got away on time and act as marshal on the course to make sure everything ran smoothly during the competition. Des was also the MC at all the clubs major functions and prize presentations where he will be fondly remembered for his wit and craic. Des was also the main organiser of the annual Christmas party for the member’s children. The Delahunty family is synonymous with Slievenamon Golf Club as his wife Ann was our Lady Captain in 2006 and a committee member, Keith, Ian and Sabina who are active members of the club. The course was closed on Saturday as a mark of respect to Des. The committee and members of the club wish to extend their deepest sympathy to his family. May he rest in peace.

One of Des' wishes was to have some of his family and friends have a drink and to drive off on the first hole. His son Ian with his favourite tipple.

Des' grandson Colin Delahunty driving off on the first tee after the funeral.

Des and his wife Ann with the Carrigan Trophy. They held the distinction of being the only married couple to win this competition, Des winning in 2001 and Ann being successful in 2008.
